I enjoy your work. Thanks. I was born in the island of Flores, came to California when I was 16 and I have spend the my life living with one foot on each side of the Atlantic. When I go to Flores I love it but I no longer belong there since everything and everyone has changed. There I am an American. I come back and I miss being there and here in California I am an Azorian…I guess that it is true you can leave the island but the island does not leave you. Thanks and please keep writing.

    1. I wasn’t even born on Flores and the place still haunts me. Unfinished karma perhaps.
      Thanks for reading!

Also the new InterDISCIPLINARY Journal of Portuguese Diaspora Studies (a project by two Azorean-academics )migh be of interest to you (http://portuguese-diaspora-studies.com/index.php/ijpds) . Surgite! Best Regards, Irene

    1. Hi Irene,

    Dear Fernanda,

My name is Elizabeth Fischbach, from Los Angeles. I happened upon your website while researching the Island of Flores and trying to make sense of a family tree I found online, it outlines a very dense ancestral line dating back to the early 18th century on the island of Flores. The person who put this together is a descended of one of my Great Grandmothers 13 children. I don’t know him.

My great grandmother, Joaquina Freitas Martins-Lucio, came to the San Joaquin Valley of central California as a teenager from Flores around the turn of the 20th century.. She married Françisco Maurício de Fraga who was also from Flores. Apparently, she was a slave on the island, stole gold from her father and hopped on a ship to the US. I also gleamed that her language here until her death was a mixture of English and Portuguese with a little bit of Chinese. I read your post about the tomb of Antonio de Freitas who might have been my great grandmothers great grandfather, António de Freitas who was married to Maria de São Pedro (Pimentel) Freitas. Maybe just a common name? The Chinese wife of his made this connection a more plausible, even though she didn’t last long. Anyway, I am very excited to have found your website, perhaps 7 years to late. I will continue to read your website for more information, it’s really interesting! Do you still publish information about the island of Flores somewhere written or a site that I’m not finding? For some reason I’m very drawn to this subject and would very much like to visit the island.

    Thank you for your time.
    All best,
    Liz

    1. Elizabeth, so sorry for the delay in responding but I’ve only just recently obtained access to this old blog of mine. Can you contact me at fernanda@shaw.ca? I’d love to discuss this connection between your family and the woman married to Antonio de Freitas.
